Free Ed Outreach Materials!

Excellence Award Winners 2008

OSA President Rod Alferness presented two chapters with OSA Student Chapter Excellence Awards while attending the Frontiers in Optics Student Chapter Leadership Meeting on October 19th in Rochester, New York.

The Excellence Awards were established to recognize the outstanding achievements of student chapters.  The awards help to encourage and financially support the many fine programs chapters provide to their peers and local communities.  Chapters are evaluated based on their community involvement, program planning and content quality.  Winners received $1,000 USD along with a certificate of achievement.

The 2008 Excellence Award for student chapters of 16 or more members went to the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics Student Chapter in Kharkov, Ukraine, which made significant contributions in chapter programming and education outreach.  The Chapter facilitated a number of education outreach activities and is developing the Young Researchers Career Development Workshop titled "Bridging a Gap between Education and Career in Electromagnetics and Photonics" which will take place in November 2008.

The 2008 Excellence Award for student chapters of 5-15 members went to the Moscow University Student Chapter in Moscow, Russia.  This year, the Chapter held several events to raise awareness of optics including their successful education seminars on scanning tunneling microscopy and nanostructures spectroscopy.  They developed a new Web site and organized a large number of activities for members in their local community.
